Dear Lawmaker,
As your constituent, I urge you to support and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a crucial piece of legislation that would begin to address police violence and reform police practices in America. This bill—named for George Floyd who police murdered in Minneapolis in 2020—is long overdue. It would, among other things:
- Ensure that law enforcement officers who violate their oaths to protect and serve their communities are held accountable, and empower state attorneys general to investigate patterns and practices of police misconduct like excessive use of force and racial discrimination.
- Require training for federal law enforcement officers on racial profiling and implicit bias as well as the duty to intervene when another officer is using excessive force, and set use of force standards.
- Ban, at the federal level, the use of choke- and carotid-holds and no-knock warrants in certain criminal cases, and incentivize states to do the same.
- Limit the transfer of military-grade firearms, ammunition, and other equipment to state and local law enforcement agencies.
- Improve law enforcement transparency, including through required dashboard and body cameras for federal law enforcement officers, data collection on police misconduct, and public reporting requirements for use of force incidents.
As we mourn victims of police violence, we urge you to use this moment to make progress. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act would be a strong step toward addressing this violence and reforming policing practices. While there is much work to be done to create a more fair system of policing in America, this legislation would help move us in the right direction.
